New --19-5-08 Remember Washing Day Print E-mail
Monday, 19 May 2008
washday This photo I came across on another site and some products I came across while at work in the supermarket brought back memories for me and I hope they will for you. Now not so long ago in the mists of time one day a week in our household was set aside for washing day ,I can still remember mam boiling shirts and the new tub we got that replaced the one in this picture --It was cream coloured with a mangle on the top . At work I see lots of PRE WASH treatments ---but I remember mam used to have her own ---A BLOCK OF CARBOLIC across dads shirt collars ---I also remember her Ironing dads shirts and spraying them with starch (boy they could stand up on there own ) . I also remember you could hang your washing in the back street with out it getting nicked ---Try doing that today ---I also remember mam getting one of these ------

avatar I remember my nanna having the wringer and Mondays was always wash day. I remember the smell of carbolic soap John LOL - it was horrid. It was the same soap she would threaten to wash our mouths out with if we ever swore!
I can remember my Mum's washing line being full with shirts, there were our 3 boys and Dad all needing clean shirts. Also she had a clothes line prop to hold the washing line up - it was huge, or as a kid it seemed the washing went all the way up to the sky LOL. I really can't remember if Mum had a twin tub though, I must ask Dad.

avatar monday was wash day at home for us, I think the washer was an Acme. It stood in the garden shed, it has a gas ring under it to heat the water carried there from the house in buckets it had a maual agitator and wringers, a real backbreasker we had it until aroud 1950 when we got an electric washer.
