NEW -----A taste of the old days ---FANCY SOME ---SASS
Wednesday, 14 May 2008
As you are aware if you are a regular to the site you will know of my love for pies from Greens in Barrow, to me they are the stuff of legend .And one other thing Ex-pats of the town (Well some of us ) long for . is a drink Barrow folks of a certain generation remember ----- MARSH"S SASS (Pictured) . I don't know about other towns in LANCASHIRE but I do know we used to have a SASS Shop in Barrow and I also fondly remember PENNY ICE BLOCKS made with SASS ,sadly production of SASS in Barrow ended some years ago --Did YOUR TOWN HAVE A SASS SHOP or STALL--Let me know via the CONTACT LRU menu bar .
Blackburn Market has a stall that sells SASPARILLA BEER (WALSHES) but is soon to CLOSE due to the owner retiring with no one to take over the Busniess
Sarsaparilla Concentrate ( Pictured one I bought recently ) is sold from the stall so folks can BREW there own Beer which makes for a refreshing drink in CORDIAL form with lots of ice on these warm summer days . I have though discovered that if you place a small teaspoon of the concentrate in a tumbler of COLA and give it a good old stir it tastes JUST LIKE MARSH'S SASS ......
Now with the planned and locally publicized closure of this stall I am considering BUYING up very much all the stocks of concentrate he has to SELL from this site so YOU and others can remember the old days of SASSPARILLIA and maybe introduce some new fans with a long cool drink during a SUMMER BARBI Q or treat the kids with your own home made ice blocks .
If you are interested in acquiring some let me know I will go ahead (A minimum order will apply ) MARSH'S SASS A PENNY A GLASS WHEN YOU DRINK IT ---IT GOES SPLASH (Remember That Barrovians ) .
As a footnote this is how much Barrow folks miss MARSH'S SASS ---A bottle of Sass recently sold on the E-BAY SITE for over £100
Click on this link to hear ---THE FIRESIDE FUSILIERS from ACCRINGTON sing of the virtues of SASSPARILLA---With THANKS ---To LES BOND
Its a real shame that that recipe died like that. Hard to believe actually. One would think there would be somebody that would revive the drink as it truly was a classic. THompson Orange was also a popular drink. John.
Apparently the BRADY Family who bought Marsh's STILL have the recipe but want to much money for it ---Remember the old Thompsons pop ,found out the mother in law used to work there .
