Saturday, 07 July 2007

jeni  On the Forum our member Jeni Pepper posted about her old house in Primrose Bank ,Stacksteads which got me thinking .DO YOU have memories pf the house you used to live in and the things you used to have ,Arga ,Old 78 record player etc .It only take s a small comment to spark a memory so send in a contribution just as Jeni has done for the THIRD time,THANKS JENI

Here is Jeni"s  memory of PRIMROSE BANK Picture of the house changed at JENI"S REQUEST

jenis_primrose   Our old house there has been up for sale, the man who lived there had had it ever since we left it in 1966 when we emigrated, I couldn't believe it. My Mum's lovely flower garden is gone now, replaced by lawn, ditto my much-loved 'play hut' AKA an old hen pen with its windows at the bottom...did anybody else have a play hut?

Mine was about eight by ten and quite clean, it had not been used for hens for some time when my Dad and I went to look at it and bought it. I was thrilled to bits....somewhere to play when it rained! I could have my friends in and if they didn't behave they were banned, LOL We used to go to Dougie Tattersall's butchers and ask for 'cat scraps' and then cook them over candles to eat!! Lord knows what we must have eaten. But it tasted great! Wonder we were not very ill. The street itself has changed little except that there are now ugly wheelie bins in front of everyone's house, where before the little discreet dustbins (and a pig bin) used to blend in with the garden areas. Our old house now has a toilet - where the kitchen sink used to be! So apparently the kitchen is now pushed back a few feet. Wall to wall carpet covers the previously obvious stone slab floor with its brown lino and maroon carpet - worn away over the bumps. The lovely marble tiled fireplace is replaced by a modern gas one, with no hearth in front....I remember our metal fender being there. The light was a single wire from the middle of the ceiling with a bulb - I don't remember it having a shade. The red-brown coloured tongue and groove door has been replaced by a windowed wood slab door painted green, and the tongue and groove partition forming a tiny vesibule with curtain for a door is gone; in its place a smart glassed vestibule with door in the requisite white paint and wavy glass. But nevertheless it is still the same dear back to back house I knew, the same roof I grew up under, bless it! I wonder who will be living there now.
