My daughter has just started driving lessons which got me thinking of the days I started driving .My lass forks out £21 for one hours lesson mine were £6 per hour with a chap called Brian Flemming in Barrow .I remember my first test and failing becuse so the examiner (Failer Finley ) as he was known said I hesitated at junctions but as an ex-biker I was waiting just in case some body on a bike went over the bonnet (I know what it feels like ) and Jimmy Saville used to say "think once think twice think bike ". Any how my second test was at 3.45 pm on a Friday in Decemeber 1981 Which I recall Brian telling me before we arrived at the test center trust me you"ll pass, why was he so sure I thought to my self .
Off I set with the examiner and after 45 mins was back at the test center and I had passed .My instuctor said to me that yes your driving is up to standard but think about it Vickers shipyard comes out at 4.30 and he wouldnt want to get stuck in that lot .He had a way of making you feel good did Brian Flemming . Do you have any memories of your Driving lessons or your test day .?
I recall how a girl I used to know took her lessons in a Mazda 343 which was a Silver colour which the instuctor used for teaching as it had duel controls .Test day arrived for her only for the instuctor to turn up in a GOLD 343 he used for tests .I cant drive that she screamed its the wrong colour .
Yes John i well remember taking my driving test and was nervous as hell at the time. I used to have a little bsa bantam motor byke and buzz around on that till i was working in a bakery, the boss wanted someone to be able to drive the delivery van, a small one those days, and he offered to pay for lessons for me. .Well, I didnt realise when i started to learn that his idea of a driving instructer was a retired ex insurance collector who was a friend of his. My god I am lucky to still be alive let alone pass my test. His idea of teaching was to go up over Birkrigg common and do all the twisty road bits first, I have never dodged as many flaming sheep in my life. I was a wreck after the first lesson and even I think he was as well. When we finally got to going round the town and getting used to things it came second nature as I had a bit of road sense with my bsa bless it. The day of the test came and the blasted car i was learning in concked out and so the boss said to have an hou...
First test I did everything right up until I had to park the car at the examiners office in Winckley Square in Preston. Shut the engine off and next thing there's a guy knocking on the windshield waving his arms about, we got out of the car to see what was up. He'd been sweeping up around the square and I'd parked the car right on top of his broom, needles to say I didn't pass. The next time I did.
When I came to Canada I borrowed a car from a friend it was a big American car and automatic, never having driven an automatic before I wasn't to sure about the controls, I was ok going forward, but at the test I had to back out of the parking, I hadn't a clue how to get it in reverse, the examiner showed me how and did pass me but it was a close call!!!!
Thats the first and only time I've ever driven an automatic.
I paid 30 bob an hour for my drving lessons
It was snowing and the traffic lights at one of the junctions were not working but I managed to pass my test on 22/2/1972

passed my test july 1959 .had 4 lessons wigan driving school 17/6 a lesson about 75p in todays money how thing have changed.i think i must have passed first time because the examiner seem to be more interested in young ladies walking about than my driving.
I took my test in 1994 in a Fiat 127. The first test I failed the gears siezed up on me. I took the second test one month later and passed. It was snowing and icy.
