My memories of Lancashire are very fond ones. I grew up in Barrow in Furness (then Lancashire) and lived on the outskirts of the town in a suburb called Roose. There were plenty of things to do in the 50s and we had fields and the coast to play and enjoy. As a kid I would love to roam the fields , picking mushrooms and also Longlining for flat fish on the sand flats of Morecambe bay.In my teens I would hunt ducks and rabbits in the area and I owned a couple of Whippets which I raced regulalry at the Furness Whippet track.Every day was an adventure , even Roose primary school was interesting and the sheltered kind of life we led was to be cherished.I left Roose school to attend Hoker st School across the town. Things changed and the quiet soft life we led turned into the survival of the fittest and strongest. All part of the way of life back then. I began working as an apprentice Electrician and did mainly domestic jobs until I worked in the Shipyard . There I met people from the area and made some lasting friendships. We had the Barrow AFC team and also Barrow Rugby league team that was definitely affected by the County boundary changes.I used to go to Cartmel National Hunt races and it was always a tremendous day out.The North Lonsdale agricultural show was a big event that I loved. The steamer boats on Windermere lake were a favourite of mine also.I would frequent the train stations from Barrow to Manchester trying to spot those elusive steam locos that never seemed to show up.I left Barrow in 1974 to look for adventure and eventually settled in Canada.I have been back to my little town on the Irish Sea a few times now and I always enjoy the visit. It will always be the same to me. Last autumn I visited Preston,Manchester, Blackpool and the Lake district and I enjoyed all the places. I will be back in May and hope to touch base with John Earnshaw and have a nice pint and a chat. MY favourite places in Lancashire are Preston the promenades in Morecambe, Southport and Blackpool. Manchester and Liverpool always intrigued me. Lancaster and the small towns up north such as Arnside and Silverdale, Carnforth. Grange Ulverston and Dalton.I miss them all and have fond memories of all these places. I will see them again
