Sometime ago you may remember me posting about old picture houses in Accrington The picture on the left shows one of the old picture houses but as yet I cannot seem to find out what it was called .A new member ALBERT recrently left this message on the old forum
Hi John.
With regards to the cinemas in Accy. The Empire and Princes were next to each other on tho lower end of Eagle st just down from Blackburn Rd. The Odeon cinema was on lower Burnley rd which was then called Broadway. The Odeon was the premier cinema in town and got all the big movies, it was were you took your date on Sunday night. My aunt Elsie was the catering manager there. sometimes she would hire me to be a waiter when she had a big function, she always paid me really well I looked forward to it, there wasn't much money around then. The Palace cinema was on Abbey st and on the corner of Peel st, just across from Avenue Parade. The Ritz cinema was also on Peel st opposite Grange Lane near the Little Bull pub. The Kings Hall cinema a,k.a The Bug Hut or The Laugh and Scratch. was situated on Abbey st and Back Burnley rd almost across from the Palace cinema. The Princes cinema burned down in the 60's I forget which year. I hope this helps
