Last Wednesday I went to the Rossendale town of BACUP many days of my childhood where spent here .It was once also the home of members PHILIP BOOTH and JUDITH who you may recall got back in touch with my family after 40 years though this and another website .So this film is about memories and some things I hope you find of interest there is even a walk around Bacup market for thoses who havent been round an English one for a few years ----MORE VIDEOs of towns throughout the whole of LANCASHIRE soon .
This week has again brought back memories for me . Some may be aware I was talking on BBC RADIO CUMBRIA this week in the early 1980s it was known in the BARROW area as BBC RADIO FURNESS and had presenters such as CAROL ABBEYCROMBE and GEOFF MUIRHEAD now incidentally chief executive of MANCHESTER AIRPORT and RON DUXBURY .
I was on RADIO FURNESS in 1983 with RON DUXBURY talking about trying to re-introduce SPEEDWAY racing in Barrow after the closure of the track in the early 1981 after a Scottish team had used it as a base in 1981 (That’s a good un for a PUB QUIZ ) I set up the local supporters club and one day got a call from an ex Barrow rider CHRIS ROYNON who had bought the track from the last promoter CLIFF HINDLE .Any Barrow folks remember the 8ft x4 signs for the FURNESS FLYERS ON PARK RD in 1978 I sign wrote them .
After many weeks and hours spent be myself and Chris and others slogging away at sometimes 1 am in the dark and rain BARROW SPEEDWAY rode again with an Open meeting on Tuesday September the 4th 1984---But it nearly didn’t (But that’s another story ) It was ME who designed the BARROW BLACKHAWKS RACE JACKETS and also wrote a column in the programmes called BROADSIDE BLAST .They were some of the best days of my life and now I can remember them again because I have now been re-united with some of the programmes this week …..seems strange Radio Cumbria(Furness) and then BARROW SPEEDWAY all in one week
I wish I could be re-united with a Race jacket.(Pictured --Eric Broadbelt and John Warmsley in the red BARROW BLACKHAWKS race jackets I designed Riding at the PARK RD RACEWAY at BARROW in 1984 v BERWICK
Chris Roynons son Adam is now a Speedway rider and has overcome some serious injuries .I believe this lad WILL one day be a WORLD CHAMPION . I hope the LOCAL media and people of BARROW take note and support him take a look at his website
When I was on Radio Lancashire last Thursday I was asking for any old photographs you may have of the towns where you live or lived so I could maybe go to where it was taken to see how the area looks today . They are now beginning to come in to me at LRU Towers so much so that my old e-mail address is becoming clogged up . So I would like to ask that in future any other photos be sent to another address which has more disk space that address is earnshaw.j@googlemail.com Thanks to Philip Booth (PSB) for this photo of STUBBYLEA PARK in BACUP
As you may know I was on BBC RADIO LANCASHIRE this week talking to JOHN GILLY GILMORE about LRU which by the way has gained us 20 new members . Seeing GILLY and heating his dulset tones reminded me of the early 1980s when a radio station become the first independent one to be set up in Lancashire . From a converted church in Preston RED ROSE RADIO was born . Those where the days when I had to pay to have streaks put in my hair the days when (Did we really wear pink jumpers and shirts. Now I remember one or two of the presenters GILLY ,DAVE SWANTON but more escape me .....can you help me out . .And seeing after finding this old poster of JOHN GILMORE some thing eles struck me ---DID ALL US LADS IN THE 80s HAVE THEM DAFT TASHES (I did)
Many years ago when I wer a lad back in BACUP when helping dad on his wagon I used to wear a pair of BLUE LANCASHIRE CLOGS . I remember clear as day gaining the art of SPARKIN UM . Clogs they say are the best things to wear on your feet . I wonder if any of our members know what the history of the LANCASHIRE CLOG is . Anyroad I have come across this video of the LANCASHIRE WALLOPERS to add a little more LANCASHIRENESS to the site film of other troops would be welcome
Whats changing in the town where you live or lived
Saturday, 02 February 2008
Over the last couple of weeks I have had time to walk around the East Lancashire towns of Accrington and Blackburn and have noticed a few changes again taking place with the skyline. In Blackburn the shopping centre is being transformed with the demolition of LORD SQUARE (pictured) which will form a larger shopping centre .So gone are the days of the CAVENDISH DISCOTECH and further up church St CATHEDRAL VILLAGE is taking shape on the site of the old SWAN pub and the GOLDEN PALMS night spot . The new freckleton St bridge modelled on the SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE is starting to dominate the skyline . Places in ACCRINGTON continue to change as they will in the next few years with the proposed new bus station and new train station plus new SUPERSTORES and new WATERSIDE apartments and new apartments now being formed within the old LIBERAL CLUB . The now updated photo GALLERY captures all the changes throughout the red rose county so if you want to keep up with your old town take a look and see what’s going on .
In the hope I can help some one share a memory I received this photo from DORIS for adding to the forum .Hope MADGARDER recognizes some one on this photo.
